Alex Campbell flying north to the WBBL

Updated: Oct 2, 2022

COLBC is excited to announce that Alex Campbell has earned a spot on the Newcastle Eagles WBBL roster for the 2022/23 season.

Alex joined City Of Leeds, alongside her twin sister Gemma, aged 11 and went on to represent Yorkshire at U13s & U15s before starring for COLBC U18 Women last season, as one of the first young women to come through the City Of Leeds Basketball Academy at Allerton High School.

Alex was full of pride upon the news of her roster spot and paid tribute to her time in Leeds:

"I'm proud to say I have been and will always be a part of the City of Leeds Basketball Club. Every single coach at the club has contributed to my development in a way that is hard to put into words, I'm especially grateful to Coach Matt Newby, Coach Ben Allen and Coach Katie Lamond as they have seen me through my young junior Basketball career. I aspire to do the club well and hope to achieve great things with the Eagles franchise on and off the court."

COLBA Academy Director Matt Newby was excited by the news threat Alex has earned a roster spot with the Newcastle Eagles Women:

‘We always want the very best environments for those graduating the City of Leeds programme.

The Eagles are at the forefront of the game in the UK, whose pathways offer young people great opportunities to continue their education and play basketball at the highest level.

Playing in the WBBL, coupled with starting her Degree at Northumbria University, Alex has really proven hard work pays off’

At Allerton High 6th form, Alex has been a role model for young girls and women at the school, where she has assisted lower school head coach Ryan Weir developing the schools pathway.

Furthermore Alex has worked in the club's community programme, coaching in schools and supporting our mini bounce and bounce sessions. This has given her a well rounded basketball education and her contribution has been outstanding.

We wish her all the best for the future and will be cheering her on every step of the way."

Good luck Alex, from everyone at COLBC.
