COLBA fortifies Coaching team with appointment of new Senior Coach!

The City Of Leeds Basketball Academy is excited to announce that Dr Sam Messam will join the Academy Coaching staff for the 2024/25 season.

As the Academy embarks on a new season with an exciting cohort of young people, Academy Director Matt Newby has added another experienced Coach to support the ongoing development of our Academy players.

Coach Messam currently works on the British Basketball Talent Pathway and continues to dedicate his time and efforts to improving opportunities for young people and the broader landscape. Critically, Sam has worked with many of the young people stepping into the Academy and will provide vital insight and support for Coach Newby as the Academy proposition expands.

COLBA Director Matt Newby was delighted at the appointment of a veteran Coach with a great deal of experience:

“The opportunity to bring a Coach with such a well-rounded CV into the Academy makes a great deal of sense at this juncture. We have the largest cohort we have seen since pre-COVID and we want to ensure that the young people get the most comprehensive basketball education possible, whilst balancing a highly-academic in-classroom offer. A lot of the young people who have enrolled in the Academy have aspirations of highly-academic destinations, so finding the balance between the two is critical. Sam has been with the programme for close to 8 years and his commitment to the multiple cohorts that have been under his charge has consistently proven an excellent bridge between performance levels. We are thankful for his impact and input at the Junior National League level and look forward to his contributions to the growth and development of the Academy programme."

Coach Messam was excited for a new challenge with the Academy:

"I am absolutely thrilled to be able to continue to support our top end athletes and to be part of the Academy system at CoLBC. Coaching is at the core of who I am and to have this opportunity to work with talented young people and support their basketball aspirations is a privilege."

Everyone at the Club would like to wish the young men and Coaches of the City Of Leeds Basketball Academy all the best for the upcoming season.
