New face bolsters Community Development Capacity

James Quinn

The City Of Leeds Basketball Foundation is excited to announce the introduction of a new full-time member of staff, with Sam Dobson joining as a Community Development Coach.

Sam will be focused on the Foundation’s community outreach work, specifically the development of new satellite clubs around the City. Already, we have seen the successful launch of a new programme at St Mary’s Academy in Menston, where Coach Dobson has been focused own developing a new after-school club for the school followed by a new ‘Bounce’ into basketball programme for young people aged 8-11 years old. This format has been successful in other quarters of the City, introducing the game to young people at the right age and stage. We look forward to the new sessions going live and are currently in negotiations with five other sites in and around the City, with a commitment to launch another two in the Summer term.

Sam brings a wealth of experience, having cut his teeth with the Newcastle Eagles Foundation, whose community interest is extensive. We see this experience as invaluable to the role that Sam will be undertaking.

Director of Basketball Matt Newby was keen to highlight Sam’s experience and qualities:

“Sam joined us at the turn of the year and has impressed on a number of levels already. He has a strong on-court presence and connects with the young people incredibly well. His role will see him working in Primary & Secondary school environments, promoting the game, identifying talent and continuing to build upon our Community Hub agenda. His experience at the Eagles, who do this better than anyone else in the country, will be key to our ambitious plans moving forward.”

Coach Dobson was delighted at the start of an exciting new role:

“It's great to be back on the floor doing what I know and love. Basketball means a lot to me and I'm excited to spread that love for the sport and help basketball grow in Leeds. It's been a pleasure to get involved with the staff and players here, and I see a promising future for basketball in Leeds.”

We would like to say a big thank you to all our community partners after a very exciting first half-term of 2025:
